Although the WMBC has been closed for the winter months we have still been busy teaching bridge. Last week Kim Spolarich, fifth grade teacher at the Sag Harbor elementary school, invited Director/teacher Sue Birdsall and me to teach bridge during her math classes. We were working with 20 ten year old children who were so excited about leaning this card game. Kim briefed them about the stimulating game “BRIDGE”. She mentioned a few fellow players Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, whose names they may recognize, and how this game will help them develop math skills, logic, cunning, social skills and communication skills, all tools needed throughout their lives.
They were very enthusiastic when we arrived. We gave them the basics for counting, evaluating, sorting, and opening a hand and let them play. They were bidding and competing within 15 minutes. Sue and I were amazed at the thoughtful questions and reasoning of their play. They loved it, we only wish we had three other bridge teachers with us at each playing table. (we were spread pretty thin!!). The students asked us to come back and asked if we could have a “bridge Club”.
Thought you would like to see the kids in action! (picture below). The class lasted for 1 ½ hour and the students asked if they could continue playing rather than go to their music class. We all had a terrific time.
We will be having special games during the Month of May as well as our regular daily “OPEN GAMES”. Be sure to check out our calendar of events.
